Title: Shab-e She’r (Poetry Night) LX

Description: The most diverse poetry reading and open mic in Toronto, Shab-e She’r has been bridging the gap between diverse poetry communities, bringing together people from different ethnicities, nationalities, ages, disabilities, religions (or lack thereof), poetic styles, voices and visions. At Shab-e She’r (Poetry Night) we don’t just wait for diversity to happen: we actively invite it. Please spread the word through social media and other means. Let our event become as diverse as we are.

Host of the evening is Bänoo Zan and the featured poets are Susie Berg and Joshua P’ng.

Hosted by NOW Magazine’s Susan G. Cole. The poets will be judged by Geoffrey E. Taylor (IFOA Director), Zviko Mhakayakora (IFOA Executive Assistant Programming) and 2017 Poetry NOW winner Stuart Ross.

Description: In this workshop (which runs Sundays from January 21 to April 15, except February 18 and 25), participants in person and online will read and write through alternating works: Tender Buttons by Gertrude Stein and Emily Dickinson’s Selected edited by Brenda Hillman. These books of poetry will generate conversation and strategies for the writing participants enact.

Participants spend the first hour reading poems (aloud) and another hour writing. The writing portion takes the form of starting points and prompts drawn from the poems as well as those of instructor Hoa Nguyen’s own design. Weekly written materials include introductory and contextualizing commentary, supplemental materials, and inventive writing prompts.
