Description: Since 1994, the University of Arizona Poetry Center’s Residency Program has offered emerging poets, fiction and non-fiction writers an opportunity to develop their work. The Poetry Center awards two residencies each summer to one poet and one prose writer to spend two to four weeks in Tucson, Arizona developing his/her work. Writers at any stage of their careers may apply; emerging writers are welcome. The residency includes a $150 stipend per week and a two-to-four-week stay in a studio apartment located within steps of the Center’s renowned library of contemporary poetry. The residency is offered between June 1 and August 31.

6th All-Ireland Poetry Slam Championship Final

Title: 6th All-Ireland Poetry Slam Championship Final

Location: Cork, Ireland
Description: Ó Bhéal in association with Cyprus Avenue presents the sixth All-Ireland Poetry Slam Championships, followed with a performance by Billy Ramsell and open-mic.

For its first time in Cork, Ó Bhéal will host the All-Ireland Poetry Slam Championship Final at Cork’s renowned music venue, Cyprus Avenue. There will be three rounds, with each poem limited to three minutes. Five judges will mark each competitor separately on Performance, Content and Audience Reaction. This year’s illustrious judges include poets Matthew Sweeney and Leanne O’Sullivan, writer Madeliene D’Arcy, filmmaker Padraig Trehy and novelist and playwright, Conal Creedon.

Title: O Bheal End of Year Reading by Gillian Clarke

Location: Cork, Ireland
Description: As Cork’s weekly poetry event, featuring guest poets and an open-mic, Ó Bhéal has become a prominent, thriving feature in the cultural landscape of Cork arts, active for at least fifty Mondays per year since April 2007. Each evening begins with a poetry challenge known as The Five Word Challenge or McNamara Slam. This is followed by one or more guest poets, with an open-mic session to end the night. The 11th of April 2011 marked the 4th Anniversary and 201st event.

Ó Bhéal presents an end of year reading by Gillian Clarke, preceded by the weekly poetry challenge and an open-mic to end the evening.

Title: David Cohen Prize for Literature announced

Description: The David Cohen Prize was established in 1992 by David and Veronica Cohen, and Arts Council England, and is recognised as one of Britain’s most distinguished literary honours. The Prize is awarded to a writer in the English language who is a citizen of the United Kingdom or the Republic of Ireland. In the past it has been awarded to novelists, dramatists, poets and essayists. The most recent recipient, Julian Barnes, joined a distinguished list of winners, including Seamus Heaney, V S Naipaul, Harold Pinter, Muriel Spark, William Trevor, Doris Lessing, Beryl Bainbridge and Thom Gunn (jointly), Michael Holroyd, and Derek Mahon.

Description: A new set of poems is to be posted shortly on the Tube for eight weeks. The poems are selected from the new anthology, Poems on the Underground: A New Edition (Particular Books / Penguin 2012), published November 1st. A series of events will be held to celebrate the new set of poems and the new anthology. On this occasion, guest poet David Constantine joins the Editors and the Apollo Chamber Players for poetry by EU poets and music by Bach and Bartok.

Description: It started with four founders back in 1992, and today, this four-day, citywide, all-inclusive annual celebration of poets and poetry has grown to become “the largest non-juried poetry festival in the U.S.” It includes several live local readings, a variety of poetry workshops, open mics, two anthology competitions and readings, a poetry slam, two poetry all-nighters and a poetry symposium!
