Description: Running since May 9, 1980, the Tree Reading Series (Tree) is one of Canada’s longest-running literary events and an essential part of Ottawa’s vibrant literary community. Tree is a non-profit organization that supports established and emerging writers from Ottawa and across Canada by offering a supportive public venue for writers to present their own work and to benefit from exposure to the work of other writers. In providing this service, Tree hopes to inspire and sustain the development of the literary community in Ottawa and to promote Ottawa as an important community for Canadian literary arts.

The evening features readings by bill bissett, Christian Milat and Madhur Anand, and also includes an open mic.

Description: This is a facilitated retreat for eight poets who have a publication record of at least one book of poetry or the equivalent in periodicals and are working towards manuscript completion. The colloquium offers a small group context. Focus will be on individual manuscript consultations and on seminar discussions dealing with technical, philosophical, or conceptual issues in contemporary poetry. There will be writing time, but please note that group participation is required. Instruction occurs within a deep-immersion over a relaxed 14 days with an emphasis on individual writing and manuscript revision. Application is open to writers 19 years of age and older from Canada and abroad. This year’s instructor is award-winning poet Tim Lilburn.

Four workshops will be led by leading poetry names. New this year are ‘The Festival Debate’ (motion: there is no point in writing poetry which people don’t understand), and ‘Desert Island Poems’. Festival headliners are Jo Shapcott, Mario Petrucci, Katrina Naomi and Alasdair Paterson.

Description: The Forward Prizes for Poetry are the most coveted awards for poetry published in Britain and Ireland: they have played a key role in bringing contemporary poetry to the attention of the wider public for over a quarter of a century. They were set up in 1992 by philanthropist William Sieghart to celebrate excellence in poetry and increase its audience, and are awarded to published poets for work in print in the last year. The three prizes – £10,000 for Best Collection, £5,000 for Best First Collection and £1,000 for Best Single Poem – are unique in honouring both the work of established poets and the debuts of brilliant unknowns. Past Forward Prizes winners include Claudia Rankine, Thom Gunn, Seamus Heaney, Alice Oswald, Ted Hughes, Carol Ann Duffy and Kathleen Jamie.
